Tell Jeff Landry To Stop Prioritizing Mass Incarceration Over Public Health!

On April 1, Louisiana Attorney General Jeff Landry sent a disturbingly ignorant letter to Gov. John Bel Edwards, urging him not protect those in the custody of Louisiana’s Department of Corrections from the novel coronavirus COVID-19. In it, he implies that releasing nonviolent, low-risk individuals would release a wave of crime and violence on our streets.

We know how ridiculous that stance is. Media reports are already showing that prisons are effectively a breeding ground for COVID-19.

We need you to tell Jeff Landry that he’s wrong.

This is a public health crisis. In the world’s most incarcerated place on Earth, Louisiana has a moral obligation to protect the individuals in her custody. These folks shouldn’t have been in prison in the first place, but now that we are facing a deadly pandemic that spreads like wildfire in dense environments (hint hint: like jails), this is about the character of our state.

Will you remind the Attorney General that Louisianans don’t share his cruel, inhumane sense of “justice?”
