Baton Rouge Set to Host 3-Day Social Justice Summit

Baton Rouge, La. – The inaugural My Louisiana Equality and Equity Summit hosted by Louisiana-based nonprofit The Justice Alliance, is set to kick off in Baton Rouge, Louisiana on June 8-10. With over 60 leading activists, social justice advocates, nonprofit leaders, and lawmakers from across the state coming together to discuss issues like the criminal justice system in Louisiana, creating education equity in the public school system, and equitable access to quality healthcare, the My Louisiana Summit seeks to identify systemic barriers to equality and equity in Louisiana while facilitating an environment for coalition-building and collaboration to address them.

“As an organization, we think it’s essential to who we are and our mission to convene the types of critical conversations that we’re anticipating having at the Summit if we’re serious about achieving real progress,” said Quentin Anthony Anderson, Founder and President of The Justice Alliance as well as the 2018 Chair of the My Louisiana Summit. “We hope the My Louisiana Summit can eventually evolve into an annual catalyst for campaigns for social change in Louisiana.”

The Summit promises to be comprehensive in its subject matter, with sessions covering a range of topics, including criminal justice reform, pay equity, LGBTQ rights, the role of artists in social change movement, environmental & climate justice, and citizen advocacy. Among the confirmed speakers at this year’s Summit include Jan Moller of the Louisiana Budget Project, former U.S. Attorney of the Eastern District of Louisiana Kenneth Polite, Professor Andrea C. Armstrong of Loyola University School of Law, and Vivian Broussard Guillory of the American Association of University Women, among others.

“The pay gap is one of the most pressing issues for women today,” said Guillory, who is participating in a moderated panel discussion at the Summit on gender pay equity in Louisiana. “Eliminating the gender pay gap would significantly mitigate the poverty rates for any couple that includes at least one woman, creating benefits for women and their families.”

General registration to attend the 2018 My Louisiana Equality & Equity Summit is currently open and free of charge. To learn about the Summit or to register, prospective attendees can visit www.MyLouisianaSummit.org.
